Kooshyar Karimi was born in 1968 in Tehran. He overcame prejudice against being Jewish in a fundamentalist Islamic state to become a doctor and a translator, often using his skills to save unmarried pregnant women from death by stoning. Kooshyar escaped from Iran to Turkey where he waited for UN refugee status at the mercy of Kafkaesque red tape. Finally making it to Australia he practices as a GP and has written three gripping books about his experiences.
